Watercolor Paper

Good watercolor paper is made from acid-free cotton rag. It may be either machine or hand made, and comes in sheets, blocks, pads, or rolls. The paper may be 90, 140, or 300 pound in cold press, hot press, or rough texture.

Watercolor paper is generally white with variations in color between brands. Sizing is often added during the manufacturing process and affects the water absorbancy of the paper. The paper should be stretched before painting in order to prevent wrinkling or buckling. Watercolor paper blocks help eliminate this step.

Watercolor paper varies between manufacturers, so experimentation is necessary for an artist to find his or her personal choice.
