Watercolor Paint
Watercolor paints are available as liquids and sticks or in tubes and pans. The paint is made from finely ground natural or chemical pigment powders mixed with a binder such as gum arabic. The resulting paste is rolled and ground before being packaged. The paint can then be diluted with water. Paint stays moist when sold in tubes, while paint sold in pans is dry or semi-moist. Other paint is sold in solid, water-soluble sticks.
Both student and professional grade paints are available. Professional grade paints are made from higher quality, more finely ground pigments, and they contain less fillers. They will cost more than student grade paints but are usually more light fast and permanent. Paint may be labeled with a marketing name or a pigment name. Colors with identical names may vary in mixture and color from one manufacturer to another. Check paint color charts for pigment information. These charts should give the degree of staining as well as granulation of any paint. The best way to find the exact color desired is to try paint from several manufacturers side-by-side.
Watercolor paints last a long time. If they dry out, they can simply be re-hydrated with water. A covered watercolor palette is an excellent place to store and mix watercolor paints. Palettes are normally white so that the true color of the paint is visible.
